Wayne Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961, Brought up in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, Gretzky work on his abilities on his backyard rink, his dad taught him, his brothers Keith, Brent, Glen. They did many drills to sharpen their skills. The team Wayne first played for when he was six, was a team for ten year old. Even though Wayne was 4 years younger, his coach said he handled the puck better than some of the 10 year olds.
Wayne Gretzky Got Drafted to the WHA instead of the NHL because the NHL had rules about what age you had to be to play but the WHA didn’t have these rules. So at the age of 17 Wayne Gretzky signed with the Indianapolis Racers. He only ended up playing 8 games for the Racers because he cost too much. The Racers told Gretzky he would be moved either to the Edmonton Oilers or the Winnipeg Jets. He ended up signing with the Oilers.
In 1979 the WHA folded and the Edmonton Oilers along with three other teams joined the NHL. The teams coming from the WHA were allowed to keep 2 skaters and 2 goalies, the Oilers chose to protect Gretzky. During his first season in the NHL he won the Hart Memorial Trophy awarded to the Most Valuable Player of the entire league. He scored 137 points (tied for first overall) that year and the next year scored 164 points. Gretzky went on to set the record for the most amount of points in a season, he scored 215 points. He also won 8 consecutive Hart Memorial Trophies. Gretzky won 4 Stanley Cups with the Oilers.
